Buying reinforcement steel in Zanzibar

A buyer's guide to ordering reinforcement steel against a drawing rather than a guess.

Start from the schedule, not the shopping list

The most expensive steel orders are the ones placed from memory. Before requesting a price, gather the bar bending schedule or, at minimum, the diameters, lengths and number of bars for the element being poured. Where mesh is specified, note the sheet reference and sheet count.

This is what allows a supplier to price tonnage accurately and to phase delivery so bar is not sitting on a wet site for weeks before it is fixed.

Send this with a steel enquiry

  • Bar diameters and the tonnage or piece count per diameter
  • Whether you need straight lengths, or cut and bent to schedule
  • Mesh type and number of sheets, plus binding wire requirement
  • Site location, access constraints and offloading arrangement
  • Pour dates, so steel arrives in the sequence the programme needs

Indicative rates and what moves them

Build Hub publishes indicative reinforcement rates so you can build a defensible budget: TZS 2,600,000 per tonne for Y8, Y10 and Y12 and TZS 2,700,000 per tonne for Y16 at the last review. Steel is an internationally traded commodity, so quoted rates move with the market, order size, availability and the delivery arrangement.

Treat any published figure — ours included — as a starting point. Ask for a written quotation before committing a budget line.

Checks at delivery

  • Diameters and bundle counts match the delivery note and the order
  • Bar is consistent in section and free of heavy flaking corrosion or deep pitting
  • Cut and bent bars carry their bar marks
  • Offload area is firm, drained and clear of the access route
  • Someone authorised is present to check and sign

Ordering steel alongside everything else

On most Zanzibar projects, steel arrives in the same window as cement, aggregate and blocks. Coordinating them through one supplier reduces the number of separate deliveries a small site has to absorb and makes it easier to hold the sequence when the programme slips.

Build Hub can price reinforcement together with cement, aggregate, sand and manufactured blocks against a single BOQ and deliver against the programme.
