Match the sand to the job

Sand for concrete, sand for mortar and sand for plaster are not interchangeable. Concrete wants a well-graded sharp sand that contributes to strength; mortar wants workability so the mason can lay a consistent bed; plaster wants a finer grade that finishes cleanly without tearing or scratching.

Using a single all-purpose load across a whole building is one of the most common causes of weak mortar joints and patchy plaster finishes. Tell us what the sand is for and we will supply against that use.

What to watch for in delivered sand

• Silt and clay content — excessive fines weaken mortar and concrete
• Organic matter and roots, which cause staining and voids
• Salt contamination, a real risk with poorly sourced coastal material near reinforcement
• Consistency between loads, so mixes do not change halfway up the wall

Ordering and delivery

Sand is supplied by the load and delivered across Unguja on a scheduled basis. Stockpile space and truck access are worth confirming before delivery — a load tipped in the wrong place gets contaminated by ground material and double-handled by the crew.
