Where the 6 inch block is used

On most Zanzibar residential and hospitality projects, the 6 inch unit carries the external envelope and the main internal structural walls, with 4 inch used for partitions inside. It gives a wall thickness that behaves sensibly for service chasing, window and door reveals, and standard plaster build-up on both faces.

It is also the size most local labour is used to laying, which matters more than it sounds: coursing rates, mortar consumption and setting-out habits are all calibrated around it.

• Against 4 inch — greater wall mass and stiffness; the right choice where the wall is structural, external or a boundary
• Against 8 inch — lighter per unit, faster to lay, less floor area consumed by wall thickness, lower foundation width

Work from wall area rather than block count guesses: measure the gross wall area in square metres, deduct openings, and apply the blocks-per-square-metre figure for the coursing you intend to use. Add an allowance for cutting and breakage.
